Finding a Job - Working Abroad
There comes a time in everyone’s life when they long to say farewell to the climate of their hometown and dream of a different temperature in an exotic place and a new life working overseas.
If you’ve ever longed to make that big transition to work abroad you’ll need all of the help and advice you can get so we’ve put together some top tips to get you started.
- Decide why you want to work abroad, if it’s because you want an extended holiday or just need some time out, this might not be the ideal reason to seek a job in another country.
- What level do you wish to go in at? You must decide if you want to start a new career as a junior or go in as a manager.
- Check out your qualifications and make sure that they are recognised in the country in which you wish to work. They might be transferable but if they are not you’ll need to speak to your prospective employer and see if they are able to offer you any kind of training course to top up your qualifications.
- Find out about the Visa you will need to work abroad and make sure that you are eligible.
- Decide if you are going to go out to the country before acquiring a job or if you need your employer to sponsor your Visa.
- Learn the language. It might sound like a very basic tip but it’s amazing how many people hoping to work in another country don’t actually have any knowledge of the native language at all.
- Do your research. Make sure that you know as much as you can about the country in which you wish to get a job. For example, find out the cost of rental properties and the average income. As with all jobs, be sure to find out plenty about the company you’ll be working for.
- If you’re planning on working within the European Union make sure that you know your rights.
